Zum Beispiel Montaretto
Nestled in a pine forest on the cliffs of the Italian Riviera, Montaretto seems to be a village like any other. But appearances can be deceptive. Montaretto has gained near-mythological status among northern Italy's leftist scene for its proud reputation as the last bastion of communism. Following on the tails of this myth, the film takes a charming, humorous and critical look at the villagers and the effect their lifestyle has beyond the town's borders.

About the Film
Not everyone here puts the label “communism” on their original way of life. Some call it “anarchy”, while others call it “altruism” or “solidarity”. Montaretto brings to mind the 'little Gallic village' from the famous French comic strip Asterix, where people ignore the political edicts of the Roman government and live a life of cheerful and stubborn originality.
Voices from the press:
A German village dweller sums up the film's message: “Communism in Montaretto functions as well as it does because, long before Marx burped up his first edicts, Montaretto was already living communism's basis principles.” And another villager adds “Philosophy exists even before it gets written down”.
This very personal film from directors Fahrad Payar and Yasmin Khalifa - who sold their own flat in Tehran to make the film - was shot in Montaretto between spring 2006 and summer 2009.
