About the Film

Michael Wörgötters film essay THE ANIMAL NEXT TO US (from the IMPORT – EXPORT series)shows Indian intellectuals pondering over video clips of cows and dogs from Austria. Instead of being asked questions in an interview format, they free-associate their personal impressions about what they are looking at. Using the same approach, the director shows everyday scenes of animals in India. The uncontroversial nature of the images from another culture loosens tongues. The people viewing these animal clips speak freely about 'the other'. ... Questions of cultural differences, questions concerning the images of 'the other' that we carry around inside ourselves are “played off the cuff and dealt with on the backs of completely innocent animals” (Michael Wörgötter).
